Word Cafe 2015
Highlights included award-winning author and creative writing teacher James George, recipient of the 2014 Katherine Mansfield Menton Fellowship and current University of Waikato writer in residence Mandy Hager, true crime writer and well-known TV presenter Scott Bainbridge, and children’s author Dawn McMillan.
Book illustrators Kat Merewether and Deborah Hinde and graphic novelist Paul Martin hosted an illustration panel, Sally Greer of Beatnik Publishing joined us for a self-publishing panel, and Raglan wildlife photographer Trevor Penfold talked about his life behind the lens.
Other Raglan locals to feature included Pisey Leng, self-published author of The Wisdom Seeker, editor of Arrival travel magazine Latesha Randall, and award-winning children’s author Sarah Johnson, who launched her latest book, The Bold Ship Phenomenal, during the festival.
Live storytelling by André Ngāpō, Antonio Te Maioha and Kani Te Manukura, an open mike night, children’s storytelling at Raglan Library and a writing competition that attracted a phenomenal number of entries all added to the spirit of the occasion.
